With the use of angle grinders attached with a 4.5" in diameter diamond cut blade that is 0.5" in thickness that cuts to a depth of 1.5"-2.0". This process was completed & the mortar joints where washed out prior to the re-pointing process.

The masonry re pointing process of the chimney is completed using very dry mortar which is so important to ensure that the mortar doesn't pop back out after the first winter. Using a trowel & what is called a slicker the new mortar is slicked( pushed ) back into the bed (horizontal) & head (vertical) mortar joints.
